The area is known for its nice climate and green landscapes, which makes for fine trekking adventures. Even more importantly the Shan State is known for its people. Meet curious and smiling locals and hill tribe people when you trek in the mountains and when you go by local transport. Spice this up with trekking into the mountains, a train trip crossing the famous bridge "The Goteik Viaduct" and a morning bicycle tour in the outskirts of the former royal capital of Mandalay - and you will have a trip quite beyond the ordinary.   • Day 1: Traveling from Mandalay to Hsipaw and walk around Hsipaw with your private guide in evening.

    Traveling through beautiful surrounding from Mandalay and on the way to Hispaw. We pick you up at your hotel in Mandalay around 9.00am (the hotel is not included – please inform us the name beforehand) for transfer to Hotel in Hsipaw by share Taxi. Where your private guide will share his knowledge about this particular region of the Shan State.

    Accommodation: Overnight at hotel in Hsipaw
    Transport and guide: Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Hsipaw around 3:00pmto start the 3-hour-walk through Hsipaw.
    Transportation not included: tuk-tuk from Hsipaw bus station to your hotel. On arrival you will go with tuk-tuk on your own to the hotel. Around 3 pm your guide will meet you to start the 3-hour-walk through Hsipaw.

  • Day 2: Free time in Hsipaw.

    A free day just for you. And the dusty Shan town of Hsipaw is the right spot to have enough free time. Most travellers love the ambience here, the early morning mist that surrounds the landscape until the sun takes over, novice monks walking the morning streets collecting alms. The splendid market with a fine mix of ethnic minorities. Just a short stroll out of town and beauty explodes. Fine small monasteries, life along the river, the fine rolling hills. Hsipaw is close to magic.

    Accommodation: Overnight at hotel in Hsipaw
    Transport not included: Any transportation used on your free day explorations in Hsipaw. If you want to rent a motorbike or tuk-tuk expect to pay around 15.000 Kyat for a day.

  • Day 3: Hsipaw – Kyaukme.

    Trekking in the hills around Kyaukme, past tea plantations and into remote villages.
    Go for an adventurous yet short ride on a local bus, which will bring you to Kyaukme, a village known for its unspoilt trekking options. From Kyaukme, trek into the remoteness of the Shan and Palaung hill villages. Into the rolling green hills covered in mist. With tea plantations as far as the eye can see, village people caring for the fields, picking the tealeaves when the time is just right. Wave to curious kids and give hand to friendly locals on the way. This is a day that truly will take you away from the tourist trail and into the Burmese life in the hill country, to life as it is really lived. (People with family will have soft trekking).

    Accommodation: Overnight at hotel in Kyaukme
    Transport and guide: Local bus from Hsipaw to Kyaukme. Your local hotel host will walk you to the bus station where your seat is arranged in advance.

  • Day 4: A beautiful train ride to the next destination Pyin Oo Lwin.

    Today is perhaps the highlight of the entire trip: A train ride from Kyaukme to Pyin Oo Lwin. Enjoy the beautiful surrounding and scenery while traveling in train through different villages. Enjoy the ride at slow pace through the Shan State, A slow-paced train ride from Kyaukme to Pyin Oo Lwin, taking you across Goteik Bridge, one of Burma's most stunning manmade marvels. Built by the British more than 100 years ago it is the highest bridge in Burma, stretching almost 700 meters across the viaduct below. And after a while you will cross the famous Gokteik Bridge that was built over a hundred years ago.

    Transport not included: Self-transfer from your hotel to Kyaukme train station. We recommend going by motorbike or tuk-tuk, which normally takes around 10 minutes and costs around 3000 Kyat. Self-transfer from Pyin Oo Lwin train station to your hotel. We recommend going by motorbike or tuk-tuk, which normally takes around 15 minutes and costs around 3000 Kyat.

  • Day 5: Travel to Mandalay

    Today, another interesting part of this trip begins. Enjoy the view at Mile 21, a view that you don't want to miss. The name Mandalay has a touch of old colonial days, Kipling, a fragment in a song. But today Mandalay is a modern metropolis, and the Chinese influence is enormous here. The hill above Mandalay is with its fine pagodas and monasteries a pilgrimage place for devoted Buddhists.
    In a shared taxi you will travel downhill to Mandalay in about 2 hours. Don't forget to ask the driver to stop at the view point at Mile 21 before you leave the mountains. Upon arrival in Mandalay the rest of the day is free for you to explore.

    Transport and guide: You will be picked up from your hotel and go by shared taxi from Pyin Oo Lwin to Mandalay for about 2 hours. Note that your driver may speak limited English.

Sæson

The rainy season from the end of May until the end of September can bring heavy and regular rainfall. Not available during Myanmar New Year’s (April 10th – 17th).
The best time to visit is from November - February when it is dry and temperatures are at their lowest; around 20-25 degrees. At night times the temperatures might go below 10 degrees. From March to May the temperature can rise to above 40 degrees!
